FOURTH WEEK OF ADVENT: LOVE. Now we light the fourth candle of Advent. This is the candle of LOVE. Jesus demonstrated self-giving love in his ministry as the Good Shepherd. Advent is a time for kindness, thinking of others, and sharing with others. It is a time to love as God loved us by giving us his most precious gift. As God is love, let us be love also.  In the Book of Deuteronomy we find these words: “For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who is not partial and takes no bribe, who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and who loves the strangers, providing them food and clothing. You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.  —  Deuteronomy 10:17-19a

RELIGIOUS SIGNIFICANCE OF THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS. The feast of Epiphany begins on Christmas day and ends twelve nights later.  Twelfth Night has long been thought to be the day the Magi of Three Wise Men arrived from the East with their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to attend the infant Jesus.  The new and old testaments of the Holy Bible are represented by the 2 turtle doves.  The theological virtues of faith, hope and charity by the 3 French hens and the 4 gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John represented by 4 calling birds.   The five golden rings represent the Pentateuch which are the first 5 books of the old testament of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.  The biblical story of the six days creation are represented by the 6 geese a laying and the seven swans a swimming are the seven sacraments, the gifts of the Holy Spirit.  The 8 beatitudes are represented by the 8 maids a milking and the nine fruits of the holy Spirit are the 9 ladies dancing. The most obvious aspect for many will be the ten commandments and the 10 Lords a leaping, with eleven faithful apostles of Jesus Christ as the 11 pipers who pipe out their call to the faithful.  Finally, the Apostle's Creed has 12 points of principle which are drummed by the 12 drummers.

THIRD WEEK OF ADVENT: JOY. This third week of Advent, let us remember that the good news of Jesus’ birth has the power to bring us great joy this Christmas. Our joy isn’t dependent on what is going on in our life, in our world, or the people that we are with. It doesn’t depend on the gifts we give or the gifts we find under the tree. No earthly thing can ever give us complete joy. Our joy comes from Jesus. That joy that flooded, the wise men, the hosts of heaven, and Mary and Joseph is the joy that still has the power to overwhelm our hearts with rejoicing.

ST. FRANCIS PRAYER FOR PEACE: Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

OLA MARTYRS.  On 8 December, 2018, in Oran, Algeria, two OLA Sisters will, along with 17 others, be beatified by the Church as martyrs of that country. For over 30 years the two OLA Sisters, Sisters Angèle-Marie Littlejohn [63] and Bibiane Leclerc [66], trained a large number of under-privileged women and girls in sewing and embroidery enabling them to support their families. They lived in the same building as their school in a very poor area of Algiers. Both Sisters were shot in the back as they returned from Mass on the afternoon of 3 September 1995. Among the other martyrs are seven Trappist monks – the subject of the movie, Of Gods and Men. At the back of the Church there are some articles about these martyrs of Algeria.

SECOND WEEK OF ADVENT: PEACE. Today we light the Second Candle of Advent, the Candle of Peace. We remember the prophets who spoke of the coming of Christ, of how a Saviour would be born, a king in the line of King David. The prophet Isaiah called Christ "the Prince of Peace". They told us how he would rule the world wisely and bless all the nations.  When Jesus came he taught people the importance of being peace-makers. He said that those who make peace shall be called the children of God. When Christ comes to us he brings us peace and he will bring everlasting peace when he comes again. We light the Candle of Peace to remind us that Jesus is the Prince of Peace and that through him peace is found. Peace is like a light shining in a dark place. As we look at this candle we celebrate the peace we find in Jesus Christ.

ST. FRANCIS PRAYER FOR PEACE: Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY.  There will be a second collection next weekend to assist those with needs in the Parish.  Distribution to be carried out by St. Vincent De Paul Society.

RECEPTION SCHOOL SIGNING Application forms are available at Saturday Evening Mass and all Sunday Masses from the Priests and should be returned on or before Monday 7th January to the Presbytery. Fr. Kevin will be distributing Certificates of Catholic Practice on Thursday 10th January from 3.30pm-6pm in the Presbytery to parents of children who are presently in Nursery and want their child in Catholic Primary School from Sept 2019.  When the Priest has evidence that the parent’s statement is true, he will present them with a “Certificate of Catholic Practice”. Please note that Fr. Kevin will only be offering certificates of catholic practice for reception applicants only.

VISION DOCUMENT: SHAPING OUR FUTURE “. This weekend marks a key milestone in the Steward of the Gospel process as the Vision Document: Shaping Our Future is published. Bishop Alan has recorded a video message to all parishioners that can be viewed on the Diocese’s website www.dioceseofbrentwood.net by clicking on the News button. Please take time to watch and listen to this message. In the News section you will also find a link to the Vision Document: Shaping Our Future.  The Vision Document: Shaping Our Future is designed as an online resource and it has links through to other websites and documents. Viewing the document on line enables it be read in large print and some people have access to read aloud functions. Wherever possible we would urge you to read the document online. Hard copies of the Vision Document are available for those who cannot access the online version.  A copy can be obtained at the end of each Mass this weekend from the Steward of the Gospel or a member of the Pastoral Parish Council.

FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT: HOPE Today we light the first Advent candle, the candle of hope. We look forward to the coming of Jesus, who is our hope now and forever. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope” (1 Peter 1:3). In this hope we look forward to celebrating Jesus’ birth on Christmas, and we look forward to Jesus’ coming again.  Prayer Dear God, as we light this candle, we pray that you will shine the light of your hope into our hearts and into our world. Amen.
