Join us at Brentwood Cathedral Parish Hall on Monday 8 May at 8pm for a CAFOD talk on "Migrants and refugees - our brothers and sisters. An update on CAFOD's response to the Refugee Crisis' followed by discussion and reflection on how we can help in our parishes and communities. Last year CAFOD's World News Officer, Laura Ouseley, travelled to the village of Idomeni on the border of Greece and Macedonia. She visited the huge makeshift refugee camp to meet the men, women and children who live there, as well as volunteers and CAFOD partners. Laura will be talking about her visit and updating us on the work that CAFOD's partners are doing in Lebanon, Jordan and Greece. How can I help refugees? Watching the plight of refugees from war-stricken countries, such as Syria, can often leave us feeling helpless and asking ourselves questions such as “How can I help?”, “Could I help welcome and support a refugee family in my community?”. If you are interested in working out answers to these questions, please come along and share your thoughts. Pope Francis called upon parishes to play their part supporting refugees. This is your opportunity to respond to that call.  If you are interested in finding out please contact Brenda Underwood from Brentwood Cathedral Justice and Peace team on This email address is being protected from spambots. Prayer for Lent

God of our healing and our wholeness, renew and recreate us in your truth. Let this time of Lent bring nourishment, refreshment, and new life to our hearts and spirits. Help us to become more aware of what we need to let go of and what we need to embrace. May we come to an ever deeper appreciation of the unique and wonderful work of art which You—the Artist of each soul—created us to be. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus your Son who died that we might live life to the full. Amen.(“Turn to the Living God” from A Place at the Table, Lori True)

There is a tale for Lent that comes from a far-off place…

One day, the Devil decided to close up shop in a certain part of the world, and so he decided to hold a fire sale and an attitude auction. Some evil people were pleased to get his tools like fear, ignorance and prejudice and be able to play his infernal games at half price…

But one person seeking to be more spiritual and caring, wandered into the shop. Intensely curious, he looked around at all the tricks of deception and the tools of malice, until he spotted the quality on the highest shelf that had the highest price. Boldly, he asked the devil what that quality was, and why was it so expensive. The devil replied, “That is discouragement. Why is it so expensive? That’s simple. It’s my favourite. With the tool of discouragement, I can pry into any person or any group and cause all kinds of havoc and damage.”

Reflection

When we put God first in everything and live by the word of the Lord instead of living from the bread of the world then we ……………..

Fast from fear; Feast on Faith
Fast from despair; Feed on hope.
Fast from depressing news; Feed on prayer.
Fast from discontent; Feast on gratitude.
Fast from anger and worry; Feed on patience.
Fast from negative thinking; Feast on positive thinking.
Fast from bitterness; Feed on love and forgiveness.
Fast from words that wound; Feast on words that heal.
Fast from gravity; Feast on joy and humor.
(adapted from A Lenten Prayer by William Arthur Ward)

A Prayer of thanksgiving for mothers

As a mother protects her children, watching over them day by day, alert to danger, and ready if necessary to sacrifice herself for their sakes, so you Lord protect, your arms constantly encircling us, your hands delivering us from harm.

For the intensity of your love, Lord Jesus we thank you.

Loving God, we thank you for mothers – for all they mean or have meant, for the love they have shown and the care they have given.

We thank you for the qualities of mothers – their patience, their kindness, concern and understanding.

We thank you for the part they play in our lives, and we thank you for this day of saying ‘thank you’ this opportunity to say what we so often mean to say but so rarely do. For mothers and motherhood, for children and families we bring you this day our grateful praise.

CENTENARY OF THE FOUNDING OF BRENTWOOD DIOCESES

A celebration marking the centenary of the founding of Brentwood Diocese on 22 March saw parish communities and Church Leaders remember those affected by the terrorist attack in London earlier in the day. Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, Bishop Alan Williams sm of Brentwood Diocese and Bishop Roger Crow, Anglican Bishop of Colchester, all said their thoughts and prayers were with those who had died or been injured and their grieving families.

The evening Mass in Brentwood marked the formation of the Diocese, which sprang from its parent Westminster 100 years ago.

In his homily Cardinal Vincent recalled Pope Francis' words to young people: "If you want to be people of hope, then go home and talk to your grandparents - they have the memory of history, the experience of living, and this is a great gift that will help you in your life's journey." He said: "As we celebrate the centenary of the Diocese, we look to our grandparents in faith. We look to them with gratitude for all they have done in establishing this Diocese, and in nurturing the faith of Catholics in East London and in Essex."

Referring to the readings, he said: "This Gospel command is that we are to live as 'missionary disciples', while the second reading from St Paul gives us clues on how to do it. Discerning what our particular giftedness may be and how to put that to service is essential to a healthy Church”..

He said that faith finds a most eloquent expression when it is grounded in the real circumstance of life. "Action is the test of our faith." If we are to spread the Good News for the next hundred years, said the Cardinal, “we must heed this call to the practical witness of faith.”

“Prayer is not an optional extra, however”, he said. "Practicality and prayer are two sides of the same coin: if one spreads faith, the other nurtures faith within us. Together they help us to see our responsibilities within a context so vast as to be eternal."

He concluded: "The praise of God is rooted in thankfulness for the past and hope for the future.

Putting faith into action: LiveSimply Award

Walthamstow parish Our Lady of the Rosary and St Patrick, in the care of the Society of African Mission (SMA) was given the ‘Live simply’ parish award on 12th March. Columban JPIC worker Ellen Teague, an award assessor, presented the award.

The award, a wooden plaque made from a recycled church pew, was received by Fr Kevin Conway SMA, Chair of the parish Faith in Action group Colm Gallagher, and Dympna Mallon, Laity Coordinator for the SMA.

The parish has become the second parish in Brentwood Diocese and the 24th parish in England and Wales to achieve the ‘Live simply’ parish award for its commitment to live more simply and sustainably and to stand in solidarity with the world’s poor. The award is a national prize for Catholic parishes putting their faith into action. Dympna Mallon spoke of the parish being a beacon SMA parish for its initiatives for social justice and care of God’s creation.

Fr. Kevin Conway SMA, in congratulating the parishioners, encouraged the parish to continue to strengthen what has already been done and initiate new measures saying, “It is my hope that this great achievement will be a stepping stone to ongoing efforts by this parish to promote more harmonious relationships with the earth on which we depend and those with whom we share it”.

In the future the parish hopes to get more involved in advocacy work on climate change inspired by Pope’s Francis’ invitation in Laudato Si’ to “work with generosity and tenderness in protecting this world which God has entrusted to us”. Bishop Alan Williams of Brentwood, in a letter of congratulations to the parish, reiterated his hope “that both priests and people of the parish continue to be inspiring examples of the commitment to Living Simply, Living Sustainably and Living in Solidarity with People in Poverty”.

In his message of congratulations Fr. Michael McCabe, Leader of the SMA Irish Province, urged the Walthamstow Parish Community to continue to be witnesses to the “integral Christian spirituality” articulated by Pope Francis in Laudato Si’.

The plaque has been erected in the porch.
