THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH

To All Parishioners,

As we cross the threshold of the new year we wish you a happy 2018.

We wish you a year filled with peace: the peace proclaimed by the angels on that holy night; the peace of Christ, who out of love became a brother to every human being!

We wish you a year filled with serenity and happiness: May you always be certain of God's love for us.

This year will bring new changes in our parish. We ask Christ who comes with his saving Gospel to guide our uncertainties and faltering steps and lead us towards the future with true hope.

Finally we say a sincere thank you for your cards, prayers and gifts received over the Christmas period.

May God bless all of us together with our families and friends.

Happy 2018

RECIPE FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Take twelve fine, full-grown months; see that these are thoroughly free from old memories of bitterness, rancor and hate, cleanse them completely from every clinging spite; pick off all specks of pettiness and littleness; in short, see that these months are freed from all the past—have them fresh and clean as when they first came from the great storehouse of Time. Cut these months into thirty or thirty-one equal parts. Do not attempt to make up the whole batch at one time (so many persons spoil the entire lot this way) but prepare one day at a time.

Into each day put equal parts of faith, patience, courage, work (some people omit this ingredient and so spoil the flavour of the rest), hope, fidelity, liberality, kindness, rest (leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the salad dressing— don’t do it), prayer, meditation, and one well-selected resolution. Put in about one teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play, and a heaping cupful of good humour.

CHRISTMAS STORY. Once upon a time, there was a man who worked very hard just to keep food on the table for his family. This particular year a few days before Christmas, he punished his little five-year-old daughter after learning that she had used up the family's only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper.

As money was tight, he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve he saw that the child had used all of the expensive gold paper to decorate one shoebox she had put under the Christmas tree. He also was concerned about where she had gotten money to buy what was in the shoebox.

Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!"

As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, now regretting how he had punished her.

But when he opened the shoebox, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady," he said harshly, "when you give someone a present, there's supposed to be something inside the package!"

The little girl looked up at him with sad tears rolling from her eyes and whispered: "Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full."

The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger.

An accident took the life of the child only a short time later. It is told that the father kept this little gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems, he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there.

In a very real sense, each of us has been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.

LIVE SIMPLY.  As a parish we have started to reduce our energy consumption by switching to LED light bulbs where practicable. This is a no brainer - not only does it save us money, but more importantly helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This helps stem the inexorable increase in global temperatures and the misery that causes through flooding, desertification and ultimately mass migration, starvation, disease and death. Swapping out lightbulbs is one thing - but there are many ways we can all help e.g. by reducing our time in hot showers, turning off electrical appliances when not in use, insulating lofts - often free of charge - and turning down our thermostats a degree. Please discuss in your families how you can do your bit to reduce energy consumption.

“REJOYCE: THE LORD IS NIGHT.” As Christmas draws near, the Church emphasizes the joy which should be in our hearts over all that the birth of our Saviour means for us. The great joy of Christians is to see the day drawing near when the Lord will come again in His glory to lead them into His kingdom. The oft-repeated Veni ("Come") of Advent is an echo not only of the prophets but also of the conclusion of the Apocalypse of St. John: "Come, Lord Jesus," the last words of the New Testament. Today is known as Gaudete Sunday. The term Gaudete refers to the first word of the Entrance Antiphon, "Rejoice". Today, we emphasize our joy that Christmas is near, and we also light the rose candle on our Advent wreath.

PLEASE HELP.  Walsingham House at Abbotswick Funding Appeal: Target £430,000. Each year, over 5,000 young people from our schools and parishes enjoy a retreat with the Walsingham House Team. In January 2018 this work is moving to Abbotswick, a beautiful house near Brentwood, set in 14 acres of grounds. In school holidays, Abbotswick will also continue to be used by parish groups seeking a time of retreat, resting with the Lord. However, Abbotswick is in need of a significant refurbishment, and we seek your help.  Please support it as generously as you can; in the words of Bishop Alan “This project builds a prayerful and inspiring future for the young people of the Diocese.” Thank you.

DIVINE MERCY- every Wednesday at 4pm in the Church.

LEGION OF MARY meeting will be held in the church on Thursdays after Mass at 10:15 am.  If anyone is interested they are welcome to attend.

RED MISSIO BOX.  Please return all your red boxes to the presbytery.  Thank you all for the continuing support for this good cause.  ~ Dolly.

UNABLE TO MAKE IT TO MASS? The church offers a service called Mass Link.  At 6pm Sunday Mass, via Skype, we call people who want to listen to the Mass and broadcast the Mass to them over their phones. This service is available for anyone who can't make it to Mass if you are ill or housebound.  If you would like this service, please give your number to the Parish Office and we will ring you every Sunday at 6pm to listen in!

Swapping out lightbulbs is one thing - but there are many ways we can all help eg by reducing our time in hot showers, turning off electrical appliances when not in use, insulating lofts - often free of charge - and turning down our thermostats a degree. Please discuss in your families how you can do your bit to reduce energy consumption.

FOR REFLECTION: In my own life, any compassion I have, any empathy I have, has come from my own brokenness. There is no other way to get it. And any worthwhile growing in my life has always been at times of conflict. We can take a lesson from God’s creation in this area.

We have all seen cocoons hanging from stress and bushes in the springtime. The cocoon is protection for our wormy creature, in the process of maturing into a butterfly. The grace of the butterfly is really beautiful to behold, but full maturity does not come without struggle. Biologists have discovered that the struggle to break through the cocoon of old life into new life is absolutely necessary for the butterfly’s survival. Without the struggle, the wing muscles would not develop the strength to fly and the butterfly would die in the cocoon.  By Jack McArdle
