Father’s Day Prayer

“God our father, we give you thanks and praise for fathers young and old. We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation; may they find courage and perseverance to balance work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice. We pray for our own fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering; may they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow. We pray for men who are not fathers but still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice. We remember fathers, grandfather, and great grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. Amen”

PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI: PRAYER FOR PEACE  Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy; O Divine Master, grant that I may seek not so much to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

The Many Ways We Can Pray There is no wrong way to pray. It’s your personal conversation with God by Pablo Diaz.   People pray in a variety of ways, reaching out beyond themselves to give thanks, ask for help, weep for loved ones, seek God’s presence. No matter what we are praying for or how we pray, there is no wrong way to do so. It’s our personal conversation with God. Mother Teresa said, “Prayer is simply talking to God. He speaks to us, we listen. We speak to him, he listens. A two way process: speaking and listening.” When we pray, it’s not only about telling God our needs but also our deepest yearnings and longing to connect with Him. The psalmist writes, “As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (Psalm 42:1-2a). The main purpose of prayer is not to gain the answers to all questions, eliminate the unknown or make life easier but to speak with God and become closer to Him. And through conversations, whether they are communicated with words or actions, we discover the many blessings of God: strength, grace, empowerment, peace, patience, healing, wisdom and much more. Although we might feel helpless at times, we are not, because prayer gives us access to a greater power. Lord, thank you for the gift of prayer and its power in our lives.

THE WISDOM OF TAKING ONE STEP AT A TIME

We don’t need to add tomorrow to our worries by Julia Attaway.

This morning I read about the annual run up the Niesenbahn Funicular stairs in Switzerland–the world’s longest staircase. Then I did my Bible reading for the day, which included Matthew 6:34, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” Oddly, the two seemed connected. You see, if I ever had to climb 11,674 steps, I would absolutely shut down if I looked too far ahead. I might glance up occasionally to take in the lay of the land, but my attention would have to be fixed on where my feet were going next or I’d stumble and fall. I’d have to take things one step at a time, one ache at a time, one breath at a time. I know this, because the times I become overwhelmed are when I look further into the future than I need to. Humans aren’t designed to see that far. When we're confused, the brain tends to fill in the blur with dire predictions. Jesus knows this. He knows it doesn’t work to worry about step number 8,000 when we are on number 872. We get so weighed down by what we don’t know that we progress more slowly. We trip over a future that may never be and trip over things that may not exist. There really is enough pain and struggle for today, and we don’t need to add tomorrow to our woes. We do better when we take one step at a time and take the steps only when we get to them.

A Key Question for God On those really bad, terrible days, here’s a way to deal with your predicament. by Julia Attaway.  It was one of those death-by-paper cut days, when little things hurt a lot, and all my nerves–even the proverbial last one–were on edge. I wanted to scream, both loudly and frequently. Fortunately, on some level I could see that mostof what felt overwhelming merited, at most, a momentary scowl.

Yet my irritation was relentless, like a piece of grit in my eye or a stone in my shoe. Everyone was driving me crazy. I distracted myself with a computer game to keep from snapping at my kids. Unfortunately (or perhaps unsurprisingly), that did little to alleviate my problem. I was still acutely aware of every minor flaw of those around me. I went for a walk, to see if exercise would help. It did, but I still felt like screaming when my teenager made noise scrambling eggs in the kitchen. I paid some bills and folded laundry, scratched the dog’s soft ears, had a cup of tea, and read non-political articles in the newspaper. Eventually I’d calmed down enough for it to occur to me to pray. But  what? “Lord, make this irritability stop!” didn’t seem right. I tried a few others before I hit the right one. The prayer that got an immediate response was, “Lord, what do you want me to learn?” “Learn to tolerate discomfort without blaming others,” came the gentle reply. I grimaced, but nodded in agreement. Yes, that was indeed what I needed to learn. Fortunately, practice makes progress. I was getting plenty of practice.
