LIVE SIMPLY.  As a parish we have started to reduce our energy consumption by switching to LED light bulbs where practicable. This is a no brainer - not only does it save us money, but more importantly helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This helps stem the inexorable increase in global temperatures and the misery that causes through flooding, desertification and ultimately mass migration, starvation, disease and death. Swapping out lightbulbs is one thing - but there are many ways we can all help eg by reducing our time in hot showers, turning off electrical appliances when not in use, insulating lofts - often free of charge - and turning down our thermostats a degree. Please discuss in your families how you can do your bit to reduce energy consumption.

FOR REFLECTION: In my own life, any compassion I have, any empathy I have, has come from my own brokenness. There is no other way to get it. And any worthwhile growing in my life has always been at times of conflict. We can take a lesson from God’s creation in this area.

We have all seen cocoons hanging from stress and bushes in the springtime. The cocoon is protection for our wormy creature, in the process of maturing into a butterfly. The grace of the butterfly is really beautiful to behold, but full maturity does not come without struggle. Biologists have discovered that the struggle to break through the cocoon of old life into new life is absolutely necessary for the butterfly’s survival. Without the struggle, the wing muscles would not develop the strength to fly and the butterfly would die in the cocoon.  By Jack McArdle

PROPHECIES The first Sunday in Advent focuses on the prophecies of the Bible describing the coming of Christ. Prophecies prepared, taught, warned and encouraged the people about God, His ways, and His plans.  This week we will look at daily mass  how over 2,700 years ago, God revealed His plan to His people. 2,100 years ago, He fulfilled His plan by sending His Son, Jesus and now in the 21st century we are anticipating the fulfilment of the final prophecies describing His returnBy Lisa Robertson

LIVE SIMPLY.  Water is essential to all living things and we should respect it’s supply.  As a parish, we are working towards this aim by seeking to install a water butt to help feed the presbytery gardens and reduce water usage.  This is one way in which we can do our own bit to help - others we can all do at home include switching from baths to quick showers, switching off the tap when brushing teeth.  WATER IS PRECIOUS - PLEASE TAKE TIME TO CONSIDER HOW YOU AND YOUR FAMILY USE IT.

DIVINE LIGHT BY JOHN O’DONOHUE, Walking on the Pastures of Wonder

One of my images of the divine is that it is the light in some form, and that the divine light works very tenderly with human freedom . If you don’t believe that the light is there, you will experience the darkness. But if you believe the light is there, and if you call the light towards you, and if you call it into whatever you’re involved in, the light will never fail you.

UNABLE TO MAKE IT TO MASS? The church offers a service called Mass Link.  At 6pm Sunday Mass, via Skype, we call people who want to listen to the Mass and broadcast the Mass to them over their phones. This service is available for anyone who can't make it to Mass if you are ill or housebound.  If you would like this service, please give your number to the Parish Office and we will ring you every Sunday at 6pm to listen in!

PLEASE HELP.  Walsingham House at Abbotswick Funding Appeal: Target £430,000. Each year, over 5,000 young people from our schools and parishes enjoy a retreat with the Walsingham House Team. In January 2018 this work is moving to Abbotswick, a beautiful house near Brentwood, set in 14 acres of grounds. In school holidays, Abbotswick will also continue to be used by parish groups seeking a time of retreat, resting with the Lord. However, Abbotswick is in need of a significant refurbishment, and we seek your help.  Please support it as generously as you can; in the words of Bishop Alan “This project builds a prayerful and inspiring future for the young people of the Diocese.” Thank you.

LIVE SIMPLYWASTE LESS.  Pope Francis reminded us in his encyclical 'Laudata Si' that looking after our planet is everyone's responsibility. One of the ways in which we can do this is to use the Earth's resources more wisely and create less waste.  What are we doing in this parish?  At St Patrick's we have stopped buying disposables like cups and plates for Tea on the Lawn. We have invested in reusable items which should give us many years of service.  What can we do at home?  We can buy and use products and materials that are made to last.  We can make the decision not to choose things which are designed to be used only once, such as disposable cleaning wipes, razors, flimsy carrier bags, plastic bottles of water and throwaway cups, plates and serviettes for parties and barbecues. All these disposables mount up and create a huge amount of waste. By using and reusing things for longer we can all help to reduce waste and its harmful impact on our planet.
