PALM SUNDAY IS THE FINAL SUNDAY OF LENT, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified.  Palm Sunday is known as such because the faithful will often receive palm fronds which they use to participate in the re-enactment of Christ's arrival in Jerusalem. In the Gospels, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey, and to the lavish praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, or possibly palms or small branches, in front of him as a sign of homage. This was a customary practice for people of great respect.  Palm branches are widely recognized symbol of peace and victory, hence their preferred use on Palm Sunday. The use of a donkey instead of a horse is highly symbolic, it represents the humble arrival of someone in peace, as opposed to arriving on a steed in war.  A week later, Christ would rise from the dead on the first Easter.

BLESSING SOMEONE YOU DON’T LIKE by Julia Attaway.  My stomach was in a knot. There’d been a major plot twist in a complicated (and delicate) project I’m working on, and fear was sitting on my chest and twisting my innards. I’d crafted and then drafted a written response but held off on sending it. Something wasn’t sitting right with me. As soon as my kids were out the door, I headed to the chapel up the street. It was empty first thing in the day. I knelt and mentally brought in each of the people I was working with (and against). That made the little space a bit crowded.  Then I stammered out blessings, one person at a time. “Blessed be God in the life of _____. May Your name be glorified through her words and actions today. Grant her the grace and wisdom she needs to do Your will.” It was a bit awkward, because my heart wasn’t 100% into wishing some of these folks well. Still, my fear had me stuck, and since it was my fear in my heart, I knew I needed to address this. I repeated the prayer more than once for each person I didn’t like. I repeated it until my heart let go of resentment and anger, and the words came out honestly. Not surprisingly, the more progress I made on this, the more the fear that gripped me faded. Then, when my heart was full of genuine blessing, I sat quietly for a while.  “Thank you, Lord. Thank you for each of these people in my life,” I finally said, and I meant it. As I gathered my coat and bag, the subtle tweak needed in the email I’d drafted became obvious. I went home and changed a few words, and sent it off with a peaceful heart.

A MUM'S LIFE.   Take your plate into the kitchen, please. Take it downstairs when you go. Don't leave it there, take it upstairs. Is that yours? Don't hit your brother. I'm talking to you. Just a minute, please, can't you see I'm talking? I said, Don't interrupt. Did you brush your teeth? What are you doing out of bed? Go back to bed. You can't watch in the afternoon. What do you mean, there's nothing to do? Go outside. Read a book. Turn it down. Get off the phone. Tell your friend you'll call her back. Right now! Hello. No, she's not home. She'll call you when she gets home. Take a jacket. Take a jumper. Take one anyway. Someone left his shoes in front of the TV. Get the toys out of the hall. Get the boys out of the bathtub. Get the toys off the stairs. Do you realize that could kill someone? Hurry up. Hurry up. Everyone's waiting. I'll count to ten and then we're going without you. Did you go to the bathroom? If you don't go, you're not going. I mean it. Why didn't you go before you left? Can you hold it? What's going on back there? Stop it. I said, Stop it! I don't want to hear about it. Stop it or I'm taking you home right now. That's it. We're going home. Give me a kiss. I need a hug. Make your bed. Clean up your room. Set the table. I need you to set the table! Don't tell me it's not your turn. Please move your chair in to the table. Sit up. Just try a little. You don't have to eat the whole thing. Stop playing and eat. Would you watch what you're doing? Move your glass. It's too close to the edge. Watch it! More, what? More, please. That's better. Just eat one bite of salad. You don't always get what you want. That's life. Don't argue with me. I'm not discussing this anymore. Go to your room. No, ten minutes are not up. One more minute. How many times have I told you, don't do that. Where did the cookies go? Eat the old fruit before you eat the new fruit. I'm not giving you mushrooms. I've taken all the mushrooms out. See? Is your homework done? Stop yelling. If you want to ask me something, come here STOP YELLING. IF YOU WANT TO ASK ME SOMETHING, COME HERE. I'll think about it. Not now. Ask your father. We'll see. Don't sit so close to the television, it's bad for your eyes. Calm down. Calm down and start over. Is that the truth? Fasten your seat belt. Did everyone fasten their seat belts? I'm sorry, that's the rule. I'm sorry, that's the rule. I'm sorry, that's the rule. By Delia Ephron.  Who can relate?  Happy Mother’s Day to all!

PRAY BIG PRAYERS.  The key to praying big prayers is understanding and believing that God is able to answer our prayers.  The words I most remembered from this past Sunday’s sermon to prepare us for the Lenten season were “Pray big prayers.” I asked myself later, Why is it that we don’t pray big prayers? Are we trying to play it safe? Could it be that we think that we know how to fix our problems?  I am rather amused when people pray and tell God how to solve their problems. When I pray, I trust God to do his will in my life. I am kidding myself if I think for one minute that I can manipulate the results with my prayers.  The purpose of the Lenten season is to draw closer to God. Most times we think of giving up something like chocolate or sweets. That would not be hard for me. What would really be a challenge is finding more time to practice the disciplines of repentance, prayer and fasting. One of my big prayers is asking God to help me eliminate doing things that are not absolutely necessary. If I can find more time for the next 40 days, then I am on a journey that can only help transform my life. Prayer is transformative and when done consistently helps guide my behaviour.  We are encouraged by the Scriptures to pray big prayers: “Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (Ephesians 3:20). The key to praying big prayers is understanding and believing that God is able to answer our prayers. For me, praying has more to do with what I think about God than anything else.  What I want for Lent is to have more time to pray so that my image of God expands. I want my heart and head to agree. I will start this season with a repentant heart. A heart that asks God to forgive me for not always seeing him as I should, according to his word. I don’t have to wonder who he is because the Bible declares it for me. I only have to believe and expect him to be true to himself.  My prayer point and challenge for you: Study the Bible and believe that God is who he says he is, and pray big prayers during the 40 days of Lent. It will become a habit. Watch what God will do. By Peola Hicks
