GENEROUS IN THEORY

A missionary once asked a new convert, “Pablo, if you had a hundred sheep, would you give fifty of them to the Lord’s work?”

He answered, “You know I would gladly give them.”

“Pablo, if you had fifty cows, would you give twenty-five to the Lord’s work?”

“Yes, you know I would be more than happy to do that.”

Again the missionary asked, “Pablo, if you had two pigs, would you give one of them to the Lord’s work?”

“That’s not fair,” Pablo replied. “You know I have two pigs.”

Many people are extremely generous in theory but not in practice. They say, “If I only had a million dollars, I would give half of it away.” This is simply not true. If we aren’t faithfully giving even ten percent of our money right now, we wouldn’t give away half a million dollars if we had it. (Kent Crockett, Making Today Count for Eternity, Sisters, OR: Multnomah Publishers, 2001, p. 151-152)

A CREED FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SUFFERED I asked God for strength, that I might achieve.  I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey . . . I asked for health, that I might do greater things. I was given infirmity, that I might do better things ... I asked for riches, that I might be happy. I was given poverty, that I might be wise ... I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men. I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God .. . I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life. I was given life, that I might enjoy all things ... I got nothing I asked for--but everything I had hoped for. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered. I, among all people, am most richly blessed

THANK YOU GOD.  Thank you God, for all I have to do today. Thank you God, for this sink of dirty dishes, it shows we have plenty to eat. Thank you God, for this pile of dirty, stinky, laundry, it shows we have plenty of clothes to wear. Thank you God, for those unmade beds in there, they were warm and so comfortable last night and I know there are many who have no beds. Thank you God, for this bathroom complete with all the spattered mirror, soggy grimy towels and dirty commode. They are so convenient. Thank you God, for this finger-smudged refrigerator that needs defrosting, It is full of cold drinks and enough left overs for two or three meals. Thank you God, for this oven that absolutely must cleaned today, it has baked so many things over the years. The whole family is grateful for that grass that needs mowing, the lawn that will need raking, we all enjoy the garden. Thank you God, even for that slamming door, my kids are healthy and able to run and play. Lord the presence of all these chores awaiting me says you have richly blessed my family.  I shall do them all cheerfully and I shall do them gratefully. Amen –Author unknown-

UNABLE TO MAKE IT TO MASS? The church offers a service called Mass Link.  At 6pm Sunday Mass, via Skype, we call people who want to listen to the Mass and broadcast the Mass to them over their phones. This service is available for anyone who can't make it to Mass if you are ill or housebound.  If you would like this service, please give your number to the Parish Office and we will ring you every Sunday at 6pm to listen in!

Like a Tree "Planted by the Waters" by Samuel Mills.  Are you planted by the waters? Are you trusting Jesus in every area of your life?  Some years ago, our house developed a major water blockage and I was using a water hose in a desperate attempt to un-stop the main drain. To say that I, and everything around me, was completely soaked would not be sufficient. As might be expected the phone rang, and with the gushing water-hose in one hand I answered the phone with the other; without even saying "hello" a voice on the other end blurted out, "And he shall be like a tree planted by the water!" God definitely has a sense of humour! My Mother, who had no idea what I was doing at the time, was quoting what has become one of my favourite Scriptures. "But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit." Jer 17:7-8 (NIV) Years later, in the midst of my morning devotion, I sensed the Holy Spirit ask, "Do you trust me in every area of your life?" Again the Scripture in Jer 17:7 came to mind. I knew this Scripture by heart, but this time it had a much deeper message. Perhaps for the first time I realized that God was describing a lifestyle that is based upon complete trust and confidence in Him. He was asking, "Do you trust Me in every area of your life, for anything you may encounter?" So I ask, are you trusting in Jesus for all your needs, in every area of your life? There is confidence in knowing that He will be with you in every situation, and that He promises to never leave or abandon you. (Heb 13:5) If you will trust in the Lord He will be there to help with decisions, temptations, illness, social situations, and whatever you may encounter. You will find renewed trust, hope, and a deeper walk with Him. In good times, tough times, or in a year of drought, you can be like the tree by the waters that does not fear or worry; whose leaves are always green and never fails to bear fruit. When your trust and confidence is in the Lord, you are blessed. It's His promise!
