OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE

NATIONAL YOUTH SUNDAY. Today is the day particularly dedicated by the Church in England and Wales to pray for and encourage our young people. For everything going on in the Diocese look at www.bcys.net where online applications for our Advent Retreat 2017 and Summer Lourdes 2018 are open. To help with the work the youth are doing within the diocese, a second collection will be taken up at all masses.

RECEPTION SCHOOL SIGNING Fr. Kevin will be distributing Certificates of Catholic Practice on Thursday 14th December from 3.30pm-6pm in the Presbytery to parents of children who are presently in Nursery and want their child in Catholic Primary school from Sept 2018.  Application forms are available at Saturday Evening Mass and all Sunday Masses from the Priests and should be returned on or before Monday 11th December to the Presbytery. When the Priest has evidence that the parent’s statement is true, he will present them with a “Certificate of Catholic Practice”. Please note that Fr. Kevin will only be offering certificates of catholic practice for reception applicants. Nursery applicants will have their certificates in the new year.

DIOCESE OF BRENTWOOD. Do you support Catholic schools and the right of Catholics to send their children to them? Then we need you to make your voice heard. The Government is making a critical decision on whether to overturn the admissions cap which prevents Catholic schools from allowing all Catholic pupils attend. They have acknowledged that this policy discriminates against Catholics and promised to abandon it, now we need to tell them not to u-turn on their promise to Catholics. Visit http://catholicnews.org.uk/education-cap  or research for “Catholic Education” in your search engine to write to the Government and urge them to drop their policy which bans new Catholic schools.

NIGHTSHELTER 2018.The rota is now up for those who want to volunteer to do the sleepover with the homeless. We need three volunteers every Friday & It is important that we have at least one male. LIVE SIMPLY.  Water is essential to all living things and we should respect it’s supply.  As a parish, we are working towards this aim by seeking to install a water butt to help feed the presbytery gardens and reduce water usage.  This is one way in which we can do our own bit to help - others we can all do at home include switching from baths to quick showers, switching off the tap when brushing teeth.  WATER IS PRECIOUS - PLEASE TAKE TIME TO CONSIDER HOW YOU AND YOUR FAMILY USE IT.

DIVINE LIGHT BY JOHN O’DONOHUE, Walking on the Pastures of Wonder

One of my images of the divine is that it is the light in some form, and that the divine light works very tenderly with human freedom . If you don’t believe that the light is there, you will experience the darkness. But if you believe the light is there, and if you call the light towards you, and if you call it into whatever you’re involved in, the light will never fail you.

LIVE SIMPLYWASTE LESS.  Pope Francis reminded us in his encyclical 'Laudata Si' that looking after our planet is everyone's responsibility. One of the ways in which we can do this is to use the Earth's resources more wisely and create less waste.  What are we doing in this parish?  At St Patrick's we have stopped buying disposables like cups and plates for Tea on the Lawn. We have invested in reusable items which should give us many years of service.  What can we do at home?  We can buy and use products and materials that are made to last.  We can make the decision not to choose things which are designed to be used only once, such as disposable cleaning wipes, razors, flimsy carrier bags, plastic bottles of water and throwaway cups, plates and serviettes for parties and barbecues. All these disposables mount up and create a huge amount of waste. By using and reusing things for longer we can all help to reduce waste and its harmful impact on our planet.

LIVE SIMPLY.  Have you considered what the benefits would be if you walked on a daily basis instead of taking the car?    * Walking short distances instead of driving lessens the impact of air pollution which can significantly benefit the health of children, older adults and anyone who suffers with allergies, respiratory and heart problems. When a car engine is cold, it takes several minutes to warm up which is when the most harmful emissions are greatest.        * Walking more and driving less reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.  Global warming has a part to play in climate change which can increase the frequency of heatwaves, floods and droughts around the world.    *Walking more and driving less reduces your carbon footprint.   *Walking more and driving less helps to reduce traffic congestion and noise levels.    *  Walking more and driving less will save you money on petrol and car repairs.  *  Walking more and driving less has been scientifically proven to lower blood pressure and cholesterol and reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes.  Also, increase energy and fitness levels and decrease body weight. Additionally, improve sleep quality and patterns.  *  Walking more and driving less gives you time for contemplation which can enhance your mental well being.  Studies have shown walking reduces the physical symptoms of anxiety associated with minor stress.  REMEMBER THAT EVEN SHORT WALKS EVERY DAY IS BETTER THAN NOTHING!
