In our own lives, any compassion we have, any empathy we have often comes from our own brokenness. There is no other way to get it.  And any worthwhile growing in our lives has always been in times of conflict. We can take a lesson from nature in this area.

We all may have seen cocoons hanging from trees and bushes in the springtime. The cocoon is protection for our wormy creature, in the process of maturing into a butterfly. The grace of the butterfly is really beautiful to behold, but full maturity does not come without a struggle. Biologists have discovered that the struggle to break through the cocoon of old life into new life is absolutely necessary for the butterfly’s survival. Without the struggle, the tiny wing muscles would not develop the strength to fly and the butterfly would die in the cocoon.
