FR. PIERLUIGI MACCALLI SMA. Our SMA Provincial Leader, Fr Michael McCabe, is asking parishioners to pray the Angelus every day during Advent [2 -24 December] for the safe release of Father Maccalli [from Italy] who was kidnapped in Niger Republic on 17 September last where he has been a missionary for over ten years. There is still no news of his whereabouts. If you don’t remember the Angelus then any prayer of your choice will be good. Thank you for your support.
OLA MARTYRS. On 8 December, 2018, in Oran, Algeria, two OLA Sisters will, along with 17 others, be beatified by the Church as martyrs of that country. For over 30 years the two OLA Sisters, Sisters Angèle-Marie Littlejohn and Bibiane Leclerc , trained a large number of under-privileged women and girls in sewing and embroidery enabling them to support their families. They lived in the same building as their school in a very poor area of Algiers. Both Sisters were shot in the back as they returned from Mass on the afternoon of 3 September 1995. Among the other martyrs are seven Trappist monks – the subject of the movie, Of Gods and Men. At the back of the Church there are some articles about these martyrs of Algeria.

SECOND WEEK OF ADVENT: PEACE. Today we light the Second Candle of Advent, the Candle of Peace. We remember the prophets who spoke of the coming of Christ, of how a Saviour would be born, a king in the line of King David. The prophet Isaiah called Christ "the Prince of Peace". They told us how he would rule the world wisely and bless all the nations. When Jesus came he taught people the importance of being peace-makers. He said that those who make peace shall be called the children of God. When Christ comes to us he brings us peace and he will bring everlasting peace when he comes again. We light the Candle of Peace to remind us that Jesus is the Prince of Peace and that through him peace is found. Peace is like a light shining in a dark place. As we look at this candle we celebrate the peace we find in Jesus Christ.
ST. FRANCIS PRAYER FOR PEACE: Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
