SUNDAY 7th OCTOBER 2018

TWENTY - SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

SECOND COLLECTION TODAY AT ALL MASSES FOR CAFOD.  On Cafod Fast Day, 5th October we invited you to share in the abundance that God has given us. We are asked to fast, pray and give to help people like Longora, who lives in a remote village in Uganda. The area is so hot and dry, that people used to struggle to get enough clean water to survive. Thanks to the generosity of parishioners in England and Wales, CAFOD has made sure Longora and her neighbours now have a reliable supply of clean, safe water.  CAFOD invites us to eat simply – perhaps having a bowl of soup instead of a meal – and give the money we save to help people like Longora.  Please collect your Fast Day envelope from the church this week and give what you can.

ENTRY TO CATHOLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS.  Fr. Kevin will be offering Certificates of Catholic Practice on Thursday 18th October from 3.30pm-6pm in the Presbytery to parents of children who are presently in Year 6 and want their child in Catholic Secondary school from Sept 2019.  Application forms are available at Saturday evening and Sunday Masses from Fr Kevin and should be returned by Monday 15th October to the Presbytery. When the Priest has evidence that the parent’s statement is true, he will present them with a “Certificate of Catholic Practice”.  PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS SIGNING IS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS ONLY AND APPLICATION FORMS IS NOT AVAILABLE IN THE PARISH OFFICE.  Application for Reception and Nursery - dates will be announced after.

A DAY OF REFLECTION & ENRICHMENT FOR READERS: As you know the Vicariate for Evangelisation are organising a Diocesan-wide day of Recollection and Enrichment for Readers planned soon at The Becket Centre, Woodford Green.  The day will be led by Dr Marian Tolley of Shrewsbury Diocese (Marian has travelled throughout Britain running courses for Readers for many years; has a highly respected reputation for running work-shops in liturgical music; the training of deacons and for speaking on various topics relating to the liturgy).  It will cover the spiritual dimension of the ministry, including:  The Real Presence in the Word of God;  Relationship of the Liturgy of the Word to the Liturgy of the Eucharist;  Preparation;  Technical aspects/difficulties of reading the Scriptures as Proclamation;  Pointers to reading aloud;  Using a microphone and much more. PARISH MEMBERSHIP. With the summer now behind us and schools reopened here in the parish we too are beginning a new term with a number of sacramental programmes getting under way.   We are aware that some people have left the parish and the area while others have joined us.  To those newly arrived we say welcome and wish you a peaceful time here.  We hope and pray that your coming to St. Patricks will satisfy your need to have a meaningful relationship with God and help you to meet new friends. Do introduce yourself to Fr. Kevin and register with the Parish Secretary and make sure you are known in case you plan to have a child receive a sacrament or apply for a place in a Catholic school.

WHERE DID I COME FROM?  ‘Where did I come from?’ the young son asked his father, while in the course of writing an essay.  ‘Santa Claus brought you,’ says the father, who did not believe that all questions really have to be answered.  ‘And where did you come from?’  ‘Oh, the stork brought me,’ was his father’s answer.  ‘And Grandad, where did he come from?’ The father held his ground firmly and replied, ‘He was found under a head of cabbage.’  The young lad returned to his writing and after a while he closed the copy and went to his bed.  The father was puzzled by the suddenness and persistence of the questions, so he checked the boy’s copy, where he read, ‘After persistent questioning, it is my firm conclusion that there has not been a normal birth in this family for three generations’. – Author unknown.
