FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

NATIONAL YOUTH SUNDAY SECOND COLLECTION last weekend amounted to £471.16.  This money will help young people who struggle financially in our Diocese, as well as helping towards other costs so that we may continue to share the Good News of Jesus Christ amongst young people.   Thank you all for your generosity.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY.  There will be a second collection next weekend to assist those with needs in the Parish.  Distribution to be carried out by St. Vincent De Paul Society.

RECEPTION SCHOOL SIGNING Application forms are available at Saturday Evening Mass and all Sunday Masses from the Priests and should be returned on or before Monday 7th January to the Presbytery. Fr. Kevin will be distributing Certificates of Catholic Practice on Thursday 10th January from 3.30pm-6pm in the Presbytery to parents of children who are presently in Nursery and want their child in Catholic Primary School from Sept 2019.  When the Priest has evidence that the parent’s statement is true, he will present them with a “Certificate of Catholic Practice”. Please note that Fr. Kevin will only be offering certificates of catholic practice for reception applicants only.

CULTURAL CAROL EVENING. All parishioners are warmly invited to the St Patrick's Cultural Carol Evening at the church on Thursday 20th December from 7pm, followed by mince pies and mulled wine. Various cultural groups from our parish will be singing Christmas carols but there will also plenty of opportunity for everyone to join in with traditional Christmas favourites. Do come and share in this event.

DIOCESE OF BRENTWOOD

RESTRUCTURING AND RENEWAL OF OUR DIOCESE.

VISION DOCUMENT: SHAPING OUR FUTURE “. This weekend marks a key milestone in the Steward of the Gospel process as the Vision Document: Shaping Our Future is published. Bishop Alan has recorded a video message to all parishioners that can be viewed on the Diocese’s website www.dioceseofbrentwood.net by clicking on the News button. Please take time to watch and listen to this message. In the News section you will also find a link to the Vision Document: Shaping Our Future.  The Vision Document: Shaping Our Future is designed as an online resource and it has links through to other websites and documents. Viewing the document on line enables it be read in large print and some people have access to read aloud functions. Wherever possible we would urge you to read the document online. Hard copies of the Vision Document are available for those who cannot access the online version.  A copy can be obtained at the end of each Mass this weekend from the Steward of the Gospel or a member of the Pastoral Parish Council.

OLA MARTYRS.  On 8 December, 2018, in Oran, Algeria, two OLA Sisters will, along with 17 others, be beatified by the Church as martyrs of that country. For over 30 years the two OLA Sisters, Sisters Angèle-Marie Littlejohn [63] and Bibiane Leclerc [66], trained a large number of under-privileged women and girls in sewing and embroidery enabling them to support their families. They lived in the same building as their school in a very poor area of Algiers. Both Sisters were shot in the back as they returned from Mass on the afternoon of 3 September 1995. Among the other martyrs are seven Trappist monks – the subject of the movie, Of Gods and Men. At the back of the Church there are some articles about these martyrs of Algeria.

There is still no news of his whereabouts. If you don’t remember the Angelus then any prayer of your choice will be good. Thank you for your support.

FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT: HOPE Today we light the first Advent candle, the candle of hope. We look forward to the coming of Jesus, who is our hope now and forever. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope” (1 Peter 1:3). In this hope we look forward to celebrating Jesus’ birth on Christmas, and we look forward to Jesus’ coming again.  Prayer Dear God, as we light this candle, we pray that you will shine the light of your hope into our hearts and into our world. Amen.
